Colbert Busch Responds to Sanford False Attacks

Charleston, SC. April 10th, 2013…  Elizabeth Colbert Busch issued the following statement about former Governor Mark Sanford’s false attacks:

“If there is anyone out there who believes that a board member of the Chamber of Commerce – not to mention the chairwoman of the South Carolina Maritime Association, chairwoman of the International Trade Conference and one of the Journal of Commerce’s Top 20 Women in Transportation – is in the pocket of big labor, I have some oceanfront property in Wyoming for you. In my role at Clemson University, I have been delighted to work so closely with Boeing on research and development in this community, as well as working together to strengthen our workforce through science, technology, engineering and math education. I couldn’t be more pleased that a strong partner like Boeing is expanding here.

“I’m not surprised at Mark Sanford’s false attacks on my character, because I am receiving overwhelming support from across the political spectrum – Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike. We’re getting support from so many different corners because the people of South Carolina want a tough, independent businesswoman to bring that same attitude to Washington and solve our country’s problems. I have refused to take any special interest pledges because my only pledge is to the people of South Carolina – and that is exactly why so many diverse groups are backing me.”

Campaign Press Secretary James Smith added:

“Former Governor Mark Sanford spent most of his career opposing the very public-private partnerships that are key to job growth, and even opposed funding for the Arthur Ravenel Bridge and improving the Charleston Harbor. The fact is, we can’t rely on Mark to commit to bringing industry and the public together to create jobs. These false attacks on Elizabeth are part of a pattern of dishonesty, and we won’t let it stand.”

Businesswoman Colbert Busch Rejects President Obama’s Budget | Press Release

Charleston, SC. April 10th, 2013… Businesswoman Elizabeth Colbert Busch, a candidate for the 1st Congressional District, issued the following statement announcing her opposition to President Obama’s budget, which is expected to be submitted today.

“I respectfully disagree with the budget that President Obama is expected to present today because it simply doesn’t take the right steps to putting our fiscal house back in order – especially from my perspective as a businesswoman. The fact is, we have to balance our budget, cut our spending and lower taxes for small businesses to create jobs. Unfortunately, this budget takes the opposite approach; it raises taxes, doesn’t balance and doesn’t cut enough – when we should be laser-focused on slashing wasteful and duplicative spending.

“Not only does President Obama’s plan fail to put our finances back in order, it would cut benefits for our seniors, which is wrong. I believe that our seniors earned their Social Security by putting money away every single paycheck for a lifetime – knowing that they could count on Social Security when they retired. Just this week, I met with seniors at Island Oaks Living Center, and they told me how much they worked and depend on Social Security – and I will stand with them. Simply put, Social Security doesn’t contribute to the deficit, and politicians should keep their hands off the trust fund.

“Between President Obama’s budget and Representative Paul Ryan’s plan, neither one has a fiscal approach that is acceptable to South Carolina families. The people of the 1st Congressional District need a representative who will fight for those values in Washington – restoring fiscal responsibility without throwing our seniors under the bus. As a tough and independent businesswoman, I’ll fight for a balanced budget amendment, cut wasteful spending and lower taxes on small businesses.”

Colbert Busch Applauds Boeing Job Expansion

Charleston, SC. April 9th, 2013…  Elizabeth Colbert Busch issued the following statement about the announcement that Boeing will invest another $1 billion and add at least 2,000 jobs in the community.

“This is a wonderful day for the hardworking people of South Carolina, and it just goes to show the success we can have when the public and private sectors work together. As a businesswoman who supports and is committed to workforce development, this is exactly the kind of project we need. As your member of Congress, I’ll work to make sure even more employers come to our state.

“I applaud Boeing for its investment in South Carolina, and I am confident that the quality of our workforce, our business climate and our prospects will only encourage more employers to come here and expand their operations. With Boeing’s growth and the investments in South Carolina from the energy economic cluster that we teamed up to build, we have the opportunity for tremendous synergy to create good jobs here.

“Boeing is a tremendous partner, whether it’s investing in research or collaborating with the community. They are committed to our children and continuing education to ensure the South Carolina workforce is prepared for the 21st century economy.”

COLBERT BUSCH RELEASES FIRST GENERAL ELECTION AD

FOCUSES ON HER “INDEPENDENT APPROACH” TO CREATING JOBS AND CUTTING WASTE

Charleston, SC. April 9th, 2013…  Today, the Elizabeth Colbert Busch for Congress campaign released their first television spot since Tuesday’s GOP runoff election.

The 30-second spot discusses her time as a single mother of three and how she will take her tough, independent approach to difficult financial situations with her to Washington.

“I’m Elizabeth Colbert Busch, and as a single mom raising three young children, I had to be independent and do what’s right for them. Now, I’m going to take that lesson to Congress.”

Colbert Busch, who worked her way up from intern to executive in South Carolina’s maritime industry, said in the ad that, “To create jobs in South Carolina, we need a well-educated and skilled workforce and we need to get rid of government waste.  The deficit is killing jobs.”

MARK SANFORD PLAYS “FAST AND LOOSE WITH THE FACTS”

Charleston, SC. April 8th, 2013… “This is just another perfect example of Mark playing fast and loose with the facts.  The wind turbine project has, and will, create good-paying jobs right here at home for American workers. The project is still under construction and studies show the wind power industry in South Carolina is projected to create as many as 20,000 jobs. When it comes to our energy, we don’t need an ‘either/or’ policy, but a business-minded comprehensive approach in order for America to truly become energy independent from foreign oil. As a businesswoman, I’m proud of bringing together both the public and private sectors as partners that can invest in South Carolina not only today, but for generations to come.

“On the other hand, Mark Sanford’s short-sighted agenda cost us jobs – 98,000 South Carolinians lost their jobs while he was in charge. Under Mark Sanford’s term as governor, government spending, taxes and debt all went up – all while he presided over an unemployment rate that was near a record high. He brought down our credit rating and oversaw a 37 percent reduction in traffic at the Port, and even TIME Magazine ranked Sanford as one of the worst governors in the country. If Mark Sanford had his way, he would have stopped the bridge and dredging – all investments that have created good jobs for our community. As a businesswoman, I know what it takes to create jobs, and that’s exactly what I’ll do in Congress.”

COLBERT BUSCH CAMPAIGN REACTS TO SANFORD RUN-OFF VICTORY

COLBERT BUSCH NOTES HER SHARED VALUES WITH “THE GREAT PEOPLE OF SOUTH CAROLINA”

Charleston, SC. April 2nd, 2013… The Elizabeth Colbert Busch for Congress campaign released a statement reacting to Mark Sanford’s special election primary victory over Curtis Bostic late Tuesday night.

“I look forward to a vigorous campaign that focuses on creating jobs, balancing our country’s budget and choosing an independent-minded leader who shares the values of the great people of South Carolina,” Elizabeth Colbert Busch said. “As a businesswoman, I will use my experience to cut waste in Washington, lower tax rates so small businesses can create jobs and do the people of South Carolina proud as their representative.”

“We need a voice in Washington who stands up for South Carolina solutions – not either political party. And my business experience will get the job done.”

Recently released internal polling by the Colbert Busch campaign showed her leading Sanford by as much as 3 points ahead of Tuesday’s run-off. A separate poll conducted by the independent Public Policy Polling group also showed Colbert Busch leading Sanford with 45% favorability with just 31% unfavorability to Sanford’s 34% favorability and 58% unfavorability rating.

“The families of this district need a representative who they can trust,” campaign spokesman James Smith said. “Mark Sanford simply has the wrong values for our community – whether that’s his terms as Governor or the last time he was in Congress, where he opposed commonsense measures like the Violence Against Women Act, which provides shelters and resources for domestic violence survivors. On issue after issue, Mark Sanford doesn’t reflect the values of South Carolina.”

POLL SHOWS COLBERT BUSCH WITH HIGH FAVORABILITY LEADING BOTH BOSTIC AND SANFORD; BOSTIC BY 9 POINTS ~ SANFORD BY 3 POINTS

COLBERT BUSCH CAMPAIGN RELEASES INTERNAL POLLING AHEAD OF GOP RUN-OFF

Charleston, SC. April 1ST, 2013… Today, the Elizabeth Colbert Busch for Congress campaign released recent internal poll showing Colbert Busch ahead of both Curtis Bostic and Mark Sanford in potential General Election match-ups.

The poll, conducted by Lake Research Partners, shows Colbert Busch ahead with 47% to Sanford’s 44%, while also finding Colbert Busch significantly leading Bostic with 48% to his 39%.

The polling also shows Colbert Busch holding a 2-to1 favorability rating at 48% and 24%, while she is viewed “very favorable” in Charleston County at 61% with only 17% viewing her unfavorably.

“It is clear the 1st district is hungry for the real world leadership and business experience that Elizabeth would bring to Washington and her focus on commonsense solutions, fiscal responsibility and creating new jobs clearly resonate with voters,” said campaign spokesman James Smith. “From her time as a single mother of three making $6.25 an hour to her twenty year career as a businesswoman creating jobs at South Carolina’s Ports, Elizabeth has shown that she is real world problem solver who will stand up to the dysfunctional, partisan politics of Washington and do what’s right for South Carolina families and businesses.”

“The voters of the 1st District want a clear, independent voice for South Carolina like Elizabeth Colbert Busch, who will work with anyone – Republican, Democrat or Independent – on commonsense solutions that will make this country great, and this poll shows just that.”

Poll conducted March 25th-27th and surveyed 500 likely special election voters from with a margin of error of +/- 4.4% Click here to download the polling memo.

Elizabeth Colbert Busch Opens Up On Life Before Politics | Patch.com

If the only things you knew about Elizabeth Colbert Busch were from the national media, you would think her home would be filled with pictures of her more famous brother, Stephen. While there is little doubt that her home holds plenty of pictures of the host of The Colbert Report and the rest of her large family, her home in a firmly middle class section of Mount Pleasant is what one would expect of a successful professional, mother and wife.

Since she announced her run for Congress in January, Colbert Busch has received plenty of media attention, but the lion’s share of the media spotlight has been focused on the sprawling GOP primary with former Gov. Mark Sanford, Teddy Turner and 14 other Republicans. But after Tuesday, when either Sanford or Curtis Bostic will win the Republican nomination, the spotlight will be trained on her and will come with much more scrutiny.

While the scrutiny will be new for Colbert Busch, facing a challenge will not.

SC1 Race seen as one of top 5 races of 2013: Washington Post

From “The Fix’s top 5 races of 2013″

3. South Carolina 1st district special election (Republican-controlled): Things are getting really interesting in this race. While former governor Mark Sanford is hoping to advance from a Tuesday GOP runoff, Democratic nominee Elizabeth Colbert Busch has been preparing for the general election. Colbert Busch turned in a dominating performance in the primary last week, and she’s proven she can raise money. It doesn’t hurt her name ID that her younger brother is Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert, either. The 1st district is very Republican (nearly 60 percent voted for Mitt Romney in 2012), which means Colbert Busch is clearly the underdog against whomever she faces.
